Decks Done Right
By Justin Sorrentino, Sorrentino Carpentry & Construction Inc.
When it comes to decking material, today the choices range from treated lumber to modern, lower-maintenance and longer-lasting alternatives like PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and composite. To help you decide what’s best for you, it’s important to understand the differences.
PVC decking is made from a high-strength plastic and may include foaming agents to make it strong yet lightweight. Reputable manufacturers such as TimberTech/AZEK offer industry-leading warranties on their deck boards, which come in many colors, textures and profiles. PVC decking is realistic, durable and fully recyclable. It never needs painting or re-staining and is resistant to pests, mold and fading. PVC decking is NOT to be confused with vinyl decking, a thin, roll-out membrane that can be used to waterproof a deck but cannot be made into deck boards.
Composite decking also outlasts and requires less maintenance than natural wood but often better resembles it. Composite boards are heavier than PVC boards and generally are made from a mixture of plastic and wood fibers, most of which are recycled materials. Trex® is the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking products. They create durable, low-maintenance, high-performance materials in a range of colors and styles.
Both types have fastening options that reduce the outward appearance of the installed decking for a more polished look. Both also expand and contract given temperature changes and will need cleaning from time to time. PVC and composite decking require a higher initial investment compared to pressure-treated wood, but their easy, maintenance-free qualities generally pay for themselves in two to three years and add to your property’s value.
Importantly, when it comes to building and installing, manufacturer’s guidelines should be followed carefully. That’s why you should only hire a professional who is specially trained and experienced in the product. For example, we are a TrexGlod® builder and a TimberTech Platinum Pro installer. We have been designing and building carefully constructed decks throughout the Hudson Valley for more than 10 years.
Whether it’s made from high-quality, pressure treated lumber or Trex composite or TimberTech PVC decking, your deck is a place to make memories with your family this summer. Let us build the deck of your dreams! Remember: Doing it right costs less than doing it over!
